At 8.08am on the morning of 13th January 2018, the entire population of Hawai'i received an SMS from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, (HEMA) which read:
BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
“On the Morning You Wake” uses innovative documentary storytelling and virtual production techniques to viscerally recreate the lived experiences of people who had to react and make impossible decisions in the face of nuclear violence for 38 minutes.
Initially titled "38 Minutes," I was involved in this project from the very beginning, helping develop the first visuals and prototypes. You can view early design development here. Throughout production, I created detailed pre-visualizations, offering a precise framework for the team to navigate production efficiently. Following the shoot, I developed the title design and created 2D design elements, including map animations.

Main Title Design
The main title design incorporates several typefaces: "On The Morning You Wake" in Alternate Gothic No.3, "To the end of the world" (excluding parentheses) in Alternate Gothic No.1, chapter numbers in Alternate Gothic Condensed ATF Medium, and chapter titles in Alternate Gothic ATF Medium.
The main title logo establishes a unified identity across the project's trailers, posters, and exhibitions.
Design Explorations
Here are some design developments for the main title. First, we carefully refined the typography and logo layout before incorporating previously created 3D elements as background design elements. We also developed the particles' appearance for the 911 call sequence, where the particles respond to audio from emergency calls made immediately after the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency's SMS alert.
Military Bases in Hawaii
I've created a 2D map showing all US military bases on O'ahu. The map's design aligns with the film's art direction by incorporating point clouds and vertices as primary visual elements.
Other Graphics
Here are some early design explorations and unused design elements. One notable element is "Treaties graphics," which illustrates how the number of nuclear weapons has changed over time and how specific international treaties have helped limit their proliferation.
MODERN WEAPONS vs HIROSHIMA ERA WEAPONS
This is a test animation demonstrating how weapons have become more powerful since the Hiroshima era.
Making of
I edited a making-of video that showcases a project's complete journey—from concept development and previsualization through shooting and post-production. My initial role focused primarily on the concept development and previsualization phases.
Trailer
I edited this trailer and designed branded materials, including a poster for the Sundance Film Festival.
